Regina Silveira - Outgrown (Tracks And Shadows)

Brazilian artist Regina Silveira utilizes the white cube of the Feldman Gallery + Project Space as the backdrop for her spatial experiments, which are composed of poetically profound, stark, black images applied directly to the gallery walls. With these stunningly graphic works, tire tracks encircling the space, a giant needle stitching the walls, Silveira is constantly calling into question our reliance on two-point perspective as means of understanding representation.

BFA students Anna Gray and Ryan Wilson Paulsen collaborated on their installation in the BFA Gallery, on view during the month of September.”Every which way” is happening in conjunction with Paulson’s TBA project, “I’m Searching Too”. His piece “I’m Searching Too” is comprised of a series of four postcards randomly sent to selected TBA Festival audience members. The piece continues Paulsen’s exploration of social practices and public art.

International artist Dinh Q. Le spoke yesterday afternoon with PNCA students, faculty and staff about leaving his birthplace and the feeling of estrangement upon his return to Vietnam as well as the continuing impact of the Vietnam War in his country. Le currently resides in Ho Chi Minh City. Most recently his work was included in: the Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Brisbane, Australia; the Gwangju Biennial in Gwangju City, Korea; in a highly acclaimed one-person exhibition at the Asia Society in New York; and in Red Hot: Asian Art Today from the Chaney Family Collection.

In a performance by Tahni Holt in collaboration with San Francisco based Architect Andrew Kudless, took place over four nights in the Swigert Commons in which 10 audience members entered the inflated space, becoming part of the performance.

Martha Ohlson’s creation story (detail above) tells of how Raven and Coyote find a grain of sand that gives light and the way the decide to share it.

Homecoming Lecture with PNCA alumnus Richard Rezac

Richard Rezac received his BFA from the Pacific Northwest College of Art (then the Museum Art School), Portland, and an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore. Following his graduation from the PNCA, Rezac was one of the founders of the alternative, artist-cooperative gallery, Blackfish Gallery, which continues today. Living and working in Chicago since 1984, Rezac is on the faculty of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His work has been exhibited nationally, most recently in the 2006 Corcoran Biennial. He has been the recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowships, John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award, Joan Mitchell Artist Award, and the 2006 Rome Prize in the Visual Arts.

Egg Drop Experiment

PNCA faculty Matthew Letzelter gave students in his 3D Foundation class an assignment: create a container that would allow an egg dropped from 20 feet to survive impact. Students could only use toothpicks, paper, string and glue. The finished piece could not be larger then 3 square feet. The students built parachutes, rockets, boxes, nests and a paper cat to house their eggs during the experiment.

PNCA Gets Green Light to Acquire New Building

Students in Libby Farr’s Art History class present work from their final assignment in the foundation gallery (right of the library entrance). Students were challenged to create a work in any medium inspired by a concept, idea, or work of art/architecture they learned about in class, incorporating the 511 NW Broadway building through a recognizable form or detail of the building. The work will be on view throughout the month.
