Nothing is ever finished, in art, in life, same difference. The dust of a fine twig burnt through to blackness rests on a slick surface. Perhaps, this is ecstasy—perhaps not, though it is certainly sensual. Unfixed, it moves effortlessly and is so obedient. Vine charcoal on vellum is a creed on mediums. As is transparency, an element of truth. It gives way to question as an integral part of the process and punishes you not for indecisiveness. Even when what you are looking at is right before you, keep looking, keep questioning. I could move charcoal around on a page all day—for a lifetime, once again, same difference. This is dust on a sheet. I hope that they hang well.
I carry this over to the application of color in Neon Sign. Working with gouache on wet-media duralar, this is a piece of pathos. It is already flaking and cracking as gouache is not as resilient on synthetic materials as vine charcoal. But the means is there. Before it dried I was able to blend the colors in lovely streams. It was raining that evening and so this approach was fitting. I strive always for a sense of fluidity and impermanence in my work, as that is what they are.
